As part the recent state COVID relief bill that included $58 million in small business support, Detroit small businesses have an opportunity to apply for additional grant funding through the Michigan Small Business Survival Grant program. There will be $4 million in grants awarded to Detroit small businesses who have been impacted by the State’s COVID-10 Epidemic Orders.
Grants of up to $20,000 will be awarded to businesses that are fully closed, with grants of up to $15,000 awarded to businesses that have been partially closed, or otherwise are open and can demonstrate an impact. Small businesses can use the funding to pay for payroll expenses, rent/ mortgage payments, utility expenses and other costs related to reopening a business.
Businesses must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Had 1 to 100 employees (including full-time, part-time and owner/employees) on a world-wide basis on November 17, 2020.
- Is in an industry that demonstrates it is affected by the DHHS epidemic orders.
- Needs working capital to support payroll expenses, rent, mortgage payments, utility expenses, or other similar expenses.
- Can demonstrate an income loss as a result of the Order as determined by the EDO in which an eligible business is located.
- Is not a live music and entertainment venue that is eligible for the Michigan Stage Survival grant program.
Small businesses will apply using a statewide portal but grant applications will be reviewed and awarded by the local EDOs (DEGC) based on eligibility requirements and local priorities and objectives, not on a first-come, first-served basis.
Applications for the Michigan Small Business Survival Grant open at 9:00am on Tuesday, Jan. 19 and close at Noon EST on Friday, Jan. 22. To apply or learn more, visit: michiganbusiness.org/survival/ or degc.org.

$3.5 Million Available for Live Event Venue Grants
The Michigan Strategic Fund approved a $3.5 million Michigan Stages Survival Grant program to provide relief to live music and entertainment venues that have experienced a significant financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The program was part of Senate Bill 748 signed into law by Governor Whitmer on Dec. 29, 2020.
The application period for the grant will open at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21 and run through Noon EST on Thursday, Jan. 28 with grants of up to $40,000 awarded to eligible venues. All applications received during the application period will be reviewed by the Michigan Independent Venue and Promoter Association, who will recommend final grant awards to the MEDC by Feb. 28 for disbursement.
